Gas heaters, hobs and califonts
At the 2023 Census, 25.9% of Ponsonby homes used a fixed gas heater as a main source of heat, against 9.5% nationally, while only 7.2% used a wood burner. Those are space heating figures, not hot water, but they point to plenty of gas pipework in the walls.
Any work on fixed gas pipes and appliances is gasfitting, so it needs an authorised gasfitter. Once the work is complete and connected, a Gas Safety Certificate is required. If you smell gas inside, WorkSafe says to keep flames away, avoid switches and phones in that area, turn the gas off at the meter or cylinder if safe, open up and go outside if it persists. In an emergency, dial 111.
Ponsonby, plumbing-wise
A board of flats and apartments
Ponsonby is in the Waitematā local board area, which had the highest share of joined dwellings in Auckland at the 2023 Census: 75.0%, against 27.9% for the region.
Some old pipes do double duty
Watercare says that in some older parts of central Auckland, wastewater and stormwater still travel in the same pipes. Next door in St Marys Bay and Herne Bay, the network is combined.
Overflow tunnels planned
Under its Western Isthmus programme with Auckland Council, Watercare plans tunnels from a shaft on Tawariki Street, Ponsonby, to take local overflows to the Central Interceptor. Construction has not been scheduled yet.
Ponsonby Road's character rules
The Unitary Plan lists Ponsonby Road as a business special character area. Repairs and work at the rear of character buildings are permitted; additions need resource consent.
Where Watercare stops and you start
Watercare owns the meter, and your water pipes begin at its outlet. For wastewater, its responsibility ends at the joint with its pipe or manhole, or where your drain crosses the boundary if the public pipe lies outside it.
Not sure whether your drain joins a separate sewer or an older shared pipe? A drainlayer with a CCTV camera can trace it, and Watercare answers questions about which pipes are yours on (09) 442 2222, option 4. A blocked sewer or an overflow at the gully trap goes to Watercare first, on option 1.

What we would do
Treat gas as its own trade from day one. If a Ponsonby renovation moves a heater, a hob or a califont, bring the gasfitter in alongside the plumber at the planning stage, and ask for the Gas Safety Certificate once everything is connected. For drains, find out what yours actually join before anyone breaks ground, since in the older streets the answer is not always obvious. Then let us put the job in front of a Ponsonby specialist who holds the right PGDB licence.
