How PlumbMatch works
- 1
Tell us what's up
The job, your suburb or town, and the best number to call. A minute, tops.
- 2
We find the specialist
A local tradie who does your kind of work, with their plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying authorisation checked on the PGDB register.
- 3
They give you a call
They ring to talk through the job and give you a quote, and it's your call from there.
Hot water cylinder on its way out?
When a cylinder starts leaking or the water goes lukewarm, it's worth knowing the options before you swap like for like.
Still deciding? Read our cylinder guide or weigh up cylinder, califont or heat pump.
The right tradie for each job
Plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are separate trades in New Zealand. Tell us the job and it goes to someone authorised for it.
Hot side
Cold side
- Blocked drainsA drainlayer or drain specialist: sinks, gully traps, tree roots.
- Leaks and burst pipesLeak detection, hidden leaks and a water bill that's crept up.
- Pipe relining and drain repairsA relining specialist, often no digging needed.
- Taps, toilets and showersDripping taps, running cisterns, new mixers and shower heads.
- Stormwater and septic tanksStormwater drains, sumps and septic systems.
See every service, or work out whether you need a plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer.
We check them with the PGDB first
- The work they specialise in. A blocked drain goes to someone who does drains, a califont to an authorised gasfitter.
- Their authorisation on the PGDB public register: the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board's own search.
- Public liability insurance on file.
- An active NZBN.
- Their Google reviews, read by a real person.
The PGDB's message to homeowners is "Ask for Licensed". We do the asking for you, then check the register again every three months.
When the tradie rings, ask for their registration number and search the register yourself.
Find tradies in your town
Who runs the water where you live, which pipes are yours and what that means for the job.
A specialist, not a pile of quotes.
Plenty of quote sites post your job to a list of tradies and wait for the calls to roll in. We match it to a specialist, and only the tradie who takes it gets your number.

Water going everywhere
- Turn the water off at the toby. It's usually at your front boundary, under a small lid in the ground.
- Keep well away if water is near power points or the switchboard.
- Then tell us the job and a tradie calls you back.
You can smell gas
- No light switches, no phones, no flames anywhere near it.
- Get everyone outside, and turn the gas off at the meter or bottle if you safely can.
- Ring your gas supplier's emergency line, or 111 if anyone is in danger.
Make it safe first. After that, an authorised gasfitter can track down the leak.
Good questions
Something else on your mind? Send us the job and ask the tradie.
Are you a plumbing company?
No. PlumbMatch is a referral service, and we don't do any plumbing ourselves. We match your job with an authorised local tradie who specialises in it.
Do I pay anything?
Not to ask. The tradie quotes you directly and you choose whether to go ahead. Any payment for the work goes to them.
Who sees my details?
Local tradies see your job, first name and suburb, never your number or email. Only the tradie who takes your job gets your contact details, and they're never sold to anyone else.
How do you choose the tradie?
The kind of work comes first: cylinders go to hot water specialists, drains to drainlayers, gas to gasfitters. Then they need to cover your area, be authorised on the PGDB register, carry insurance and have an active NZBN. If two or more tradies fit, the first to take your job gets it, and nobody else ever sees your phone number or email.
Do you cover my town?
The site covers the whole country. Tell us the job and your postcode, and it goes to a tradie who works your area. If nobody local takes it within two days, it opens to tradies across your region.
