Privacy policy

You give us details about a plumbing, gas or drain job so the right local tradie can take it on and get in touch. Below: what we collect, who sees it, where it is kept and who to go to if you're unhappy.

Who we are

PlumbMatch runs this site from Australia. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean PlumbMatch.

Why New Zealand privacy law applies

PlumbMatch is run from Australia, but the Privacy Act 2020 covers an overseas business for what it does while carrying on business in New Zealand. Running PlumbMatch NZ is that kind of business, so the Act and its Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) apply to how we handle your details.

What happens when you send us a job

  • That we're collecting it: everything you put into the job form.
  • Why: to show your job to authorised local tradies who do that work, so one of them can take it and contact you about it.
  • Who receives it: the tradie who takes your job, as set out below, and the service providers that help us run the site.
  • Who collects and holds it: PlumbMatch, which runs this site from Australia.
  • Whether you have to give it: no law requires you to. Without a phone number and where the job is, though, no tradie can take it or ring you.
  • Your rights: you can ask the tradie who takes your job to see or correct the copy they hold, and complain to the Privacy Commissioner about how your details were handled.

The tick box on the job form

The job form has a single tick box, worded "I agree to PlumbMatch sharing my details with one local plumber so they can contact me about this job." This policy holds the full detail behind that tick.

Your consent travels with the job: the record shows the exact wording you ticked and the time you sent the form.

What we collect

  • The kind of job, whether it's urgent, and anything you tell us about it.
  • Where the job is: your postcode, and your suburb or town if you add it.
  • Whether you own the place, rent it or look after it for someone.
  • Your first name, your phone number and, if you give it, your email.
  • How the website gets used. Microsoft Clarity shows us which pages get opened, what gets tapped and how far down people read, so we know what to fix. Clarity sets cookies, and Microsoft deals with that data as its own privacy statement says.

What we do with it

We use it for one purpose: getting your job to a suitable tradie who can contact you about it.

Along the way, we check your mobile number is real, and automated tools read your message and work out the size of the job.

Who sees it

Local tradies who cover your area: they see the job, your first name and your suburb. Not your phone number or email.

The tradie who takes the job: the first to accept gets your first name, mobile, email and message, and contacts you.

If no local tradie takes it: after 48 hours, tradies elsewhere in your region may see the job on the same terms.

Passing your details to that tradie is the reason you gave them to us, and you agree to it when you tick the box on the form. We don't sell your details, and no other tradie receives your contact details.

The tradie's use of your details

The tradie who takes your job collects your details from us, not from you. Since 1 May 2026, IPP 3A has required a business that collects personal information that way to tell the person, unless an exception applies. The Act's own example of an exception is close to how PlumbMatch works: the first business has already told you, as this policy does, who your details go to and why.

The tradie uses your details to contact you about the job and to quote it. They hold them in their own business, and you can ask them, too, to see or correct what they hold.

When the tradie gets in touch, they tell you their business name, so you know who holds your details from then on.

Where your details are kept

Job form details are held in Australia. These service providers help run PlumbMatch, and each one only stores or processes details for us:

Vercel (United States) hosts the website.

Twilio (United States) checks that your mobile number is real.

Microsoft Clarity (United States) provides the site analytics described above.

Google reCAPTCHA (United States) is a check that a person, not a spam program, sent the job form.

Automated tools in our lead system read your job description and work out its size. Some of them are in the United States.

Under section 11 of the Act, a provider that only stores or processes information for us, such as a website host, is treated as us holding it. Handing details to an overseas organisation for its own use would be different: IPP 12 allows that only where the information is protected adequately or by comparable privacy law, or with your permission after you've been told it may not be protected the same way.

How long we keep it

We keep job details while we need them to run PlumbMatch and to meet our legal obligations, and never longer than seven years. After that they are deleted or de-identified.

The tradie's copy of your details

Whoever takes your job keeps their own record of your first name, phone number and job, and is responsible for it as their own business. To see, correct or delete it, go to that tradie directly.

If something goes wrong with your details

If a privacy breach has caused serious harm, or is likely to, the law requires us to tell you and the Privacy Commissioner as soon as practicable.

Questions and complaints

If you're unhappy with how your details were handled, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner takes complaints at privacy.org.nz.

For complaints about a job, see complaints and disputes.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.

We match your job with an authorised local tradie who does this kind of job, PGDB licence checked.
