Plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers by region

Pick your patch.

Choose your region below, or jump straight to your city or town. Licences work the same way everywhere in New Zealand, but the water provider, and who owns which pipe, changes from place to place.

One licence, many water providers

The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) licenses plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers for the whole country. There is one public register, and our licence check guide shows how to use it.

Water is a different story. On 1 July 2026, Tiaki Wai replaced Wellington Water, IAWAI took over Hamilton's network, Waikato Waters began in Waipā and South Waikato, and Selwyn Water started serving Rolleston.

More handovers are due from July 2027, including Northland Waters, Central Districts Water, Water Hawke's Bay, Alpine Water and Southern Waters. Until each one starts, the council is still your provider.

Where your responsibility for a water pipe or drain ends depends on that provider. Each region page sets out what we could confirm, and says plainly where we couldn't.

Straight to a city

Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga and Dunedin have the most local detail. Smaller towns sit on their region's page.

How matching works anywhere

Tell us the job and where it is. Local tradies who cover your area and specialise in that work can see it, with your first name and suburb only.

Only the tradie who takes your job gets your contact details, and they ring you. If nobody takes it within 48 hours, tradies elsewhere in your region may see it.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.

We match your job with an authorised local tradie who does this kind of job, PGDB licence checked.
