Water on the Coast
Until Coast Waters takes over, Grey District Council is the one to ring about the network in Greymouth. Its pipe rules couldn't be read when we checked, so ask the council where its pipe ends before anyone digs near the boundary.
Hokitika has its own page too.
Wetback cylinders
A wetback heats water from a wood or pellet fire. Water in pipework inside the firebox heats up and rises to the cylinder, so the electric element doesn't have to run.
Rheem says a local plumber decides whether a wetback is possible, because where the fire sits relative to the cylinder is crucial. Our wetbacks page goes further.
Replacing a cylinder tied to a wetback skips building consent only if the new one is a comparable open-vented cylinder, in the same position, on the same pipework. Building work otherwise needs a consent unless another exemption applies.
When a repair can't wait
If work is urgent to save life or health or to prevent serious property damage, and a consent can't practicably be got first, it can go ahead without one. Afterwards, the owner must apply for a certificate of acceptance as soon as practicable.
Who can touch the gas
All gasfitting is restricted work. Restricted-class gasfitters can do it under supervision, but they cannot connect a gas appliance to the supply.
Thinking of a califont? Rheem says most gas storage heaters can reuse a home's existing gas pipe, but a continuous flow unit needs a bigger one from the meter. Mention any planned swap when you describe the job.
Whoever issues a gas certificate of compliance must give a copy to the person who contracted the work.
Apprentices on your job
Trainees, the PGDB's word for apprentices, work under a certifying supervisor. For their first 12 months they work only in that supervisor's direct presence, within eye and earshot.
What we would do on the Coast
If your cylinder runs off a wetback, tell the tradie before they quote. A comparable open-vented swap in the same spot is one job; moving it or changing the type is another, with different paperwork. And if a burst forces an urgent repair, keep the invoices and photos together for the certificate of acceptance.
Tell us the job, and a West Coast tradie who specialises in it can pick it up. Your contact details go only to the one who takes it.
