IAWAI and Waikato Waters
IAWAI looks after water across Hamilton City and Waikato District, and council water and wastewater assets have moved to it. Customer services shift across over time. Hamilton doesn't yet have city-wide residential water meters, although Waikato District does.
Waikato Waters serves Waipā, Waitomo and South Waikato, and Matamata-Piako joined on 1 October 2026. Its customer contract makes you responsible for everything on your side of the point of supply, and says leaks there must be fixed promptly. Its own guide puts that point where a meter joins your pipes, or at the toby if there's no meter. For wastewater it's the joint with the public pipe or manhole when that pipe runs inside your section, otherwise the boundary.
Sewage problems in Hamilton
IAWAI hasn't published a point-of-supply rule we could find. Its wastewater advice is the useful part: sewage backing up inside your home or section may be a private drain problem for a licensed plumber, while an overflow from a manhole, drain or pipe goes to your council.
Coromandel tank water
Many smaller Coromandel communities and homes run on private supplies such as tanks and streams. Our pumps and tanks page covers that kind of setup.
The three PGDB licence classes
Certifying is the top class. Certifying plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers can work unsupervised, supervise others and certify work.
On 1 April 2025 the middle class became plain Plumber, Gasfitter or Drainlayer, replacing Tradesman, and Restricted replaced Journeyman. Both work under a named certifying supervisor, and neither can certify.
So ask who the supervisor is, and look that person up on the register as well.
Wetbacks, cylinders and gas
A wetback cylinder can be swapped without consent only for a comparable open-vented one, in the same position, on the same pipework. Other water heaters are exempt when the replacement includes a controlled heat source or is hooked up to one. Both exemptions need an authorised person doing the work.
Gas jobs are graded by risk. A like-for-like appliance swap is low risk, a brand-new appliance is general, and altering an existing installation is high risk. General and high-risk work isn't complete until a certificate of compliance is issued.
What we would do in Waikato
Work out first whether the fault is yours. Sewage coming up inside the house can point to a private drain, which is a plumber's job. Sewage spilling from a manhole or a public pipe goes to the council, even in Hamilton or Cambridge, because fault calls still go there for now. On a Coromandel tank supply, mention it when you describe the job so the tradie knows what they're walking into.
Tell us the job and the town, and a Waikato tradie who specialises in it can take it. Only that tradie gets your phone number and email.
