Grey Lynn facts
Flats and renters
At the 2023 Census, 19.4% of Grey Lynn homes had one bedroom, nearly three times the national 6.9%, and 45.1% of households didn't own their home or hold it in a trust.
The tunnel's north end
Watercare's Central Interceptor was bored north under the Manukau Harbour to finish at Tawariki St, Grey Lynn. The 16.2 km tunnel is now fully running, capturing wastewater and stormwater flows that would otherwise add to wet-weather overflows.
A tunnel under Grey Lynn Park
Watercare has applied for consent to build about 890 m of tunnel to a shaft in Grey Lynn Park, taking local overflows to the Central Interceptor. No start date has been set.
Gas heating
A fixed gas heater was a main source of heat in 15.5% of homes, against 9.5% nationally. Gas pipes and appliances need an authorised gasfitter.
Old suburbs, shared pipes
Watercare says most of Auckland has separate wastewater and stormwater pipes, but some older parts of central Auckland still have a combined network, carrying both in the same pipe. Its page doesn't list streets. If you're changing downpipes or a gully trap in an older house, ask the drainlayer to confirm where each pipe goes before connecting anything new. Watercare's customer contract says you must make sure no stormwater runs from your property into its wastewater network without authorisation.
Renting a flat
Watercare says landlords are responsible for leaks on their property, so a dripping tap or running toilet in a rental is the landlord's to fix. Report it in writing. A leak in the meter box itself is Watercare's: its crews repair it, and it may adjust the account.

What we'd do in Grey Lynn
Before any outdoor drainage work on an older house, pay for the drainlayer to trace and camera the pipes first. Knowing where the downpipes and gully trap actually discharge saves digging twice, and keeps you on the right side of Watercare's rules. Inside, a running toilet or dripping tap costs money every day, so fix it or report it now.
