Plumbers in Ōrewa

Beach town, growing fast.

Ōrewa is one of the Hibiscus Coast's beach-facing town centres, on Watercare's water and wastewater network. Most homes are lived in by their owners, plenty are new, and the waterfront is on Auckland Emergency Management's list of places at risk from flooding. Send us the job and we'll put it in front of an authorised Ōrewa-area plumber, drainlayer or gasfitter who handles that kind of work.

Ōrewa's water, wastewater and stormwater

Three organisations, three jobs. Watercare brings drinking water to your meter and owns the meter itself; from the meter's outlet onward, the pipes are yours. It also takes your wastewater, and its responsibility starts where your drain joins its pipe or manhole, or at the boundary if its sewer sits beyond it. Auckland Council manages the public stormwater network.

Sewage overflowing or a drain that won't clear? Watercare wants you to contact it first, on (09) 442 2222 then 1, so it can rule its own pipe in or out before you pay a drainlayer.

Ōrewa facts a tradie should know

The beachfront is a known weak spot

Auckland Emergency Management's Hibiscus and Bays plan says coastal erosion and climate change have raised the risk of coastal inundation and flooding, and that recent events showed vulnerabilities particularly in Ōrewa and along Manly Beachfront.

Hundreds more homes since 2018

Stats NZ counted 4,431 occupied homes in the Ōrewa statistical area in 2018 and 5,412 in 2023. Consents for new dwellings peaked at 507 in the year to March 2022.

New builds wait on Army Bay

Ōrewa is on the Hibiscus Coast, where Watercare says new resource consents needing a public wastewater connection aren't being granted until the Army Bay plant upgrade, scheduled for 2031. Homes with a building consent already can connect.

Owners, not landlords

In 2023, 61.7% of Ōrewa households owned their home and 14.7% held it in a family trust. Only 23.6% didn't own it, against 34% nationally, so most leaks here are the occupier's own to sort.

What we would do

Before winter storms, clear the gutters, downpipes and the grate over your gully trap, the outside drain where the waste pipes meet, so rain has somewhere to go. Then look up your section on Auckland Council's Flood Viewer. If water ever comes up through the gully trap in heavy rain, ring Watercare first, then ask us for an authorised Ōrewa drainlayer to check your side.

Questions people ask

I'm buying an Ōrewa section to build on. What should I check?

Ask Watercare whether a public wastewater connection will be available. On the Hibiscus Coast, new resource consents needing one are on hold until the Army Bay upgrade, so it can shape what you can build and when.

Who fixes a leak under my front lawn?

If it's between the meter and the house, you do, with a plumber. If water is coming from the meter box or the street side of it, report it to Watercare.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
