The Wainuiomata North relining
Tiaki Wai is relining old wastewater pipes and manholes from Russell Road to McKay Street, parallel to Frederick Street near Black Creek, to prevent leaks and blockages. Relining slips a new pipe inside the old one through the manholes, which generally avoids open trenches. Most of the work is on public land, with a little on private property, and Tiaki Wai contacts affected owners directly.
After the main pipe, crews reconnect it to the lateral pipes that run into people's homes. The laterals themselves remain the owner's to maintain under Tiaki Wai's rules.

22% of homes were sometimes damp and 3% always damp, compared with 15.8% and 2.3% nationally.
Heating
Heat pumps were a main heating type in 68.3% of homes and wood burners in 26.3%.

Water in, wastewater out
The Wainuiomata and Orongorongo rivers are among the sources of metropolitan Wellington's water, and one of Tiaki Wai's four water treatment plants is at Wainuiomata. Wastewater from the suburb goes to the Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant with the rest of the Hutt Valley's.
Blocked gully trap or private drain? That's a plumber. Overflowing public manhole or a burst in the road? Report it on 0800 TIAKI WAI (842 549). Close by: Lower Hutt and Petone. Region-wide: blocked drains and drainlayers.
What we would do
Keep wet wipes, pads, nappies and cooking fat out of the drains. Tiaki Wai says only the 3 Ps (pee, poo and toilet paper) belong there, and wipes labelled "flushable" still help form the blockages it calls ragmonsters. A blockage on your side of the network is your bill. If the gully trap is already slow, book a Wainuiomata drainlayer before it backs up.
