Miramar at a glance
Homes and owners
Miramar had 3,597 occupied homes at the 2023 Census. 54.7% of households owned theirs, 10.1% held it in a trust and 35.2% did neither. 44% of homes had three bedrooms.
Hardly any wood burners
Only 9.2% of homes used a wood burner as a main heater, against 28.2% nationally. Electric heaters (55.2%) and fixed gas heaters (19.4%) were both above the national rate.
Tsunami map
WREMO publishes a tsunami zone map for Miramar and the Miramar Peninsula, plus an address search. If a quake is long or strong, people in a zone should head inland, uphill or to the fifth floor or higher once the shaking stops.
Lower pressure is planned: what it means
Tiaki Wai's regional programme aims for pressure that is right for homes and firefighting but no higher than needed. It says managing pressure extends the life of pipes and reduces new leaks. The Miramar work is scheduled for the 2026/27 financial year, pending final design checks, and Tiaki Wai says it will share details closer to the time.
Inside the house, weak flow at one tap or shower usually points to that fitting rather than the street. A plumber can check aerators, mixers and valves before anyone blames the network.
Your part of the system
Under Tiaki Wai, the lateral carrying wastewater from your home to the public network is the owner's to maintain, and gully trap blockages are a plumber's job. Downpipes from the roof should feed stormwater, never the gully trap. For anything in the road, ring 0800 TIAKI WAI (842 549). No toby rule is published for Wellington City.
Elsewhere in Wellington: Karori and Johnsonville. Job pages: water pressure, Wellington emergency plumbers and Wellington blocked drains.
What we would do
If your water pressure changes after Tiaki Wai's work, ask a neighbour before you book anyone. A change along the whole street is Tiaki Wai's to explain and no plumber can fix it. If only your house is affected, or only one fitting, that's private plumbing, and a Miramar plumber who specialises in water pressure is the right person to find the cause.
