The Johnsonville water main

Tiaki Wai is renewing an ageing drinking water pipe, in poor condition, that was laid between 1957 and 1960 along Johnsonville Road, Disraeli Street and Broderick Road. The first phase runs on Broderick Road between Bannister Avenue and Moorefield Road and should take three months; the whole project is planned to take a year. Separately, the pumps at the Johnsonville Pump Station, which move bulk drinking water through the network, are being upgraded for Greater Wellington.

The main is Tiaki Wai's. If your supply cuts out or the pressure changes while crews are nearby, check with Tiaki Wai before calling a plumber.

Johnsonville homes

Many households don't own

In 2023, 39.5% of Johnsonville households neither owned their home nor held it in a family trust, above the 34% national rate. If that's you, involve the owner early: the lateral is theirs to maintain.

Smaller homes

A quarter of the 4,206 occupied homes (25.4%) had two bedrooms, against 19.5% nationally.

Electric and gas heat

Heat pumps (68%) and electric heaters (54.6%) were the main heating. Fixed gas heaters were in 16.1% of homes, so gasfitting work comes up too.

On a major fault

WREMO says Wellington City sits on the Wellington Fault, one of the most active in the plate collision zone, with many more faults nearby.

Pipes that are yours

Tiaki Wai's rule is that the lateral, the pipe linking your home to the public wastewater network, is the property owner's to look after. Blocked or damaged gully traps and private pipes need a plumber. Where exactly its water pipe ends at the boundary isn't published for Wellington City, so ask Tiaki Wai before work near the street.

What we would do

Planning an extension, sleepout or retaining wall? Find out first whether a public pipe crosses your section. Tiaki Wai says works within 3 metres of its network generally need its approval, and it won't approve building over service connections, water supply pipes or sewer pressure pipes. Tiaki Wai has guidance on locating public pipes, a drainlayer can trace private ones, and asking before the plans are final saves a redesign.

Questions people ask

Who fixes a blocked drain in Johnsonville?

If the gully trap or the pipes on your property are blocked, Tiaki Wai says to call a plumber. If sewage is overflowing from a public manhole or the street, report it to Tiaki Wai on 0800 TIAKI WAI (842 549).

Is the pump station work about the water in my house?

Only indirectly. It upgrades pumps that move bulk drinking water through the network, on behalf of Greater Wellington. It is network work, not something a home plumber deals with.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
