Metered water and leaks
Waikato District already has residential water meters, and metered homes get a separate water-use bill twice a year. That makes a hidden leak an expense as well as a nuisance.
Once an undetected leak has been repaired, Waikato District customers can apply for a partial credit, called water remission. Keep the plumber's invoice and a note of what was fixed.
To test for a leak, turn every tap off, note the meter reading, wait without using water, then read it again. Our leak check tool walks you through it.

Extending a Huntly house?
- Find out where the lateral runs before you design. Waikato District Council doesn't allow any part of a lateral, past the point of supply, under a building.
- Building close to or over a public pipe means going through the council's build-over process.
- Ask the plumber and drainlayer for their PGDB licences and the name of their supervisor.
What we would do
In Huntly a leak shows up on the bill, so check the meter whenever use looks high, and get leaks fixed fast; remission is for undetected leaks you've had repaired. If sewage backs up inside, ring a licensed plumber. If it's spilling from a manhole in the street, ring Waikato District Council. Planning an extension? Locate the lateral first.
