Rolleston's numbers
Selwyn, not Christchurch
Stats NZ puts all four Rolleston statistical areas in Selwyn District.
Building flat out
1,065 new dwellings were consented in the year to March 2026, up from 539 two years before. On census night in 2023, 489 homes were under construction.
Bigger houses
47% of Rolleston dwellings have four bedrooms, almost double the national 24%.
Dry, heat-pumped homes
92% use a heat pump as a main heater and 95.7% report no damp, both well above the national figures.
Selwyn Water's first year
Selwyn Water Limited was set up as a council-controlled organisation on 22 May 2025. The government lists it as fully operational from 1 July 2026, and it sets and collects water charges from that date.
Across the district, council water reaches 82% of homes and council wastewater 70%. On Rolleston's rural fringe, check whether a place is on the sewer or a septic tank before you book a drain job; our septic tanks page helps.
Papers to keep from a Rolleston build
- The building consent and the council's code compliance certificate.
- A self-certification certificate of compliance, if an endorsed plumber or drainlayer signed off the work. The council can refuse the CCC without it.
- The Gas Safety Certificate for any fixed gas appliance, califont included.
- The names of the plumber, the drainlayer and their supervisors, for a PGDB register check.
What we would do
With this many Rolleston homes going up at once, your best protection is paperwork. Before the plumber starts, ask whether the work will be self-certified and by whom, check that person's licence on the PGDB register, and keep every certificate in one folder. A defect that turns up in the first year is far easier to sort with the paper trail in hand.
