Warkworth now

A new plant at Snells Beach

Watercare opened the Snells Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant on 15 September 2025 to take all of Warkworth's wastewater, replacing a plant built in 1955 and ending discharges to the Mahurangi River.

Connections still limited

Watercare says its works have freed capacity for new connections below the Elizabeth Street bottleneck, but not elsewhere until everything is finished, expected in late 2027. North of the river had further restrictions.

Wetter than the city

NIWA says the area around Warkworth gets more rain than urban Auckland: about 214 days a year with rain and 146 wet days of at least 1 mm.

Flood-prone pockets

The Rodney emergency plan says parts of Warkworth are considered vulnerable to flooding, and that the 2023 storms brought flooding, landslides and power cuts to parts of Rodney.

If your home has a septic system

For properties off the town sewer, the Rodney plan says a whole septic system should be checked and serviced every three years, and higher-tech treatment systems with pumps or aeration every six months. Powered systems stop in a power cut, though they are usually built to cope with at least a day.

A homeowner cannot install, alter or repair a drain, PGDB says, and that includes connecting one to a septic tank. That work is for an authorised drainlayer. See septic tanks.

Town water, power and your pipes

On the town supply, Watercare owns the meter and the pipes on its street side, and you own everything from its outlet to the house. A leak in the meter box goes to Watercare on (09) 442 2222, option 1.

Vector's lines run from Wellsford to Papakura. After a power cut it says a cylinder can take up to six hours to reheat; if it is still cold, check the switch, then ring Vector on 0508 832 867 for an electric cylinder.

Nearby: Silverdale, Ōrewa and Kumeū. By job: drainlayers, blocked drains and hot water cylinders.

What we would do

Thinking of a sleepout with a bathroom, a minor dwelling or a subdivision in Warkworth? Ring Watercare before you pay for plans, because whether you can connect depends on where you are relative to the Elizabeth Street bottleneck and the river. If you are on a septic tank, put the three-yearly service in the calendar and keep the records. When it is time for the work, we will match you with an authorised Warkworth drainlayer or plumber who knows the area.

Questions people ask

Can our new Warkworth sleepout connect to the sewer?

Maybe not yet. Watercare says capacity for new connections is limited until its works finish, expected in late 2027, and its contract says adding to your plumbing may need a new connection. Ask Watercare before you build.

How often should a septic tank be serviced?

The Rodney emergency plan says every three years for the whole system, and every six months for higher-tech treatment systems. Repairs to the tank or its drains need an authorised drainlayer.
