Flood-prone pockets after 2023
Auckland Emergency Management's local board plan says the 2023 Anniversary floods confirmed Māngere Bridge and Favona as vulnerable to coastal inundation. It also names land next to Te Ararata Creek Reserve, Te Ara Tāwhana/Moyle Park, the Black Bridge pump station and Vickers Park as vulnerable to flooding.
Works to make the Te Ararata and Harania catchments flood resilient have been approved under Healthy Waters' Making Space for Water project: wider stream capacity, more maintenance and debris traps. The plan still suggests checking your address on the council's Flood Viewer.
Māngere facts that shape a plumbing job
New sewers for Māngere East and Favona
Watercare is adding a pump station, a pipeline and a storage tunnel six metres under Archboyd Avenue to cut wet-weather overflows and make room for growth. It aims to finish by the end of 2027.
Where Auckland's wastewater ends up
Watercare's Central Interceptor tunnel, fully running since July 2026, carries flows from Point Erin all the way to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Damp homes are common
At the 2023 Census, 8.5% of dwellings in the Māngere statistical area were always damp and 27.5% sometimes, against 2.3% and 15.8% nationally. 60.3% of households didn't own their home.
Full houses
Knowledge Auckland found Māngere-Ōtāhuhu had the highest share of crowded households in Auckland in 2023, 25.4%. More people under one roof means more showers from one cylinder and more load on the drains.
Sewage, stormwater and your section
Sewage spilling from a manhole, or from your gully trap onto the ground, is a Watercare call first: (09) 442 2222, option 1. Its staff check whether the public pipe is the cause. If the fault is in your private drain, a drainlayer fixes it. Rainwater pooling on your section is normally the owner's problem; a blocked council drain or flooded road is Auckland Council's, on 09 301 0101.
Jobs across Auckland: blocked drains, drainlayers, hot water cylinders and emergency plumbers. Next door: Ōtāhuhu, Papatoetoe and the rest of South Auckland.
What we would do
If your household has grown and the hot water runs out halfway through the morning, don't just turn things up. Have a plumber look at whether the cylinder still suits the number of people using it; our cylinder size tool is a starting point. And if you rent, report leaks and slow drains to the landlord in writing as soon as you notice them.
