Plumbers in Porirua

Around the harbour arms.

Porirua is a city with its own council, and Tiaki Wai has delivered its water services since 1 July 2026. Most of its people live near the coast and the harbour. Tell us what's wrong and we'll put you in touch with an authorised Porirua tradie who specialises in exactly that.

Porirua facts that matter for plumbing

More damp than average

At the 2023 Census, 4.2% of Porirua dwellings were always damp and 18.4% sometimes damp, compared with 2.3% and 15.8% across New Zealand. Damp has many causes; a slow leak under the floor is one a plumber can rule out.

Bigger houses

Of Porirua's 19,080 occupied homes, 28.7% had four bedrooms (24% nationally). A bigger house usually means more taps, traps and seals to keep an eye on.

Streams and harbour

WREMO lists Porirua Stream and Horokiwi Stream running through the city, and says the coast and the land around Porirua Harbour are at risk from tsunami.

Ageing mains in Tītahi Bay

Tiaki Wai is renewing nearly 8 kilometres of water mains there, many 60 to 70 years old. In the South Beach catchment, a significant share of the wastewater network runs across private property.

Pipes, drains and who to ring

Under Tiaki Wai, the lateral from your house to the public wastewater network is the owner's to maintain, and a blocked gully trap or private pipe means calling a plumber. Roof downpipes belong on the stormwater system: if yours run into the gully trap, they need redirecting. Tiaki Wai hasn't published where its water pipe ends in Porirua, so ask it before paying for work at the boundary.

Wastewater from Porirua City goes to the Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant near Rukutane Point, just south of Tītahi Bay, which Porirua and Wellington city councils own together. Leaks in the street, low pressure or overflowing manholes go to Tiaki Wai on 0800 TIAKI WAI (842 549).

What we would do

If a Tiaki Wai letter says your private drain has faults, don't ignore it and don't panic. Ask a drainlayer to review the CCTV footage and log sheet that come with it, agree a repair plan inside the time the letter gives, and send Tiaki Wai proof once the work is done. The letter goes on the property file supplied with a LIM, so evidence of the repair matters when you sell.

Questions people ask

Does Wellington Water still look after Porirua?

No. Tiaki Wai took over water services for Porirua and the wider metropolitan Wellington region on 1 July 2026, replacing Wellington Water. The old Wellington Water website now redirects to Tiaki Wai.

Why are new flow meters going in at Cannons Creek?

Tiaki Wai is adding two flow meters in Mungavin Avenue and Champion Street so it can monitor and control two existing pressure control valves better. It's network work on the public side, not something a home plumber does.
