Plumbers in Matamata

Waikato Waters since October.

Matamata is in Matamata-Piako District, and on 1 October 2026 Waikato Waters took over its water and wastewater from the council. For now you still pay the council for water and report faults to it. Tell us about the job and we'll match you with an authorised plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer who takes work in Matamata.

Where your pipes start in Matamata

Waikato Waters looks after its side of the point of supply, and everything past that point is yours. If your property has a water meter, the point is where the meter joins your pipe. With no meter, it's the gate valve, better known as the toby.

Drains follow the same idea. When the public wastewater pipe runs through your section, your part ends at the joint with that pipe or its manhole. When the public pipe sits outside your boundary, yours ends where it crosses the boundary.

Water bubbling up in the street or on the footpath? Ring Matamata-Piako District Council, which passes faults on to Waikato Waters for now. If people or property are at immediate risk, ring 111 first.

Local facts for Matamata homes

A new water provider

The October handover moved more than 10,200 connected customers across Matamata-Piako to Waikato Waters. Hamilton's provider, IAWAI, covers Hamilton City and Waikato District, so its rules don't apply in Matamata.

Stream and bore water

Waikato Waters lists Matamata's source as the Waiteariki Stream plus groundwater, with no fluoride added.

A town that kept building

Matamata had 3,378 private dwellings at the 2018 Census and 3,948 by 2023. Consents for new homes peaked at 195 in the year to March 2020 and were 108 in the year to March 2026.

Gas is less common

At the 2023 Census, 7.6% of Matamata homes used a fixed gas heater as a main heating type, under the 9.5% national figure, while heat pumps were at 82.7%. Any gas heater on fixed pipes needs an authorised gasfitter for repairs or changes.

What we would do

Before booking anyone for a leak, find your toby and check whether there's a meter, because that decides where Waikato Waters' pipe ends and yours begins. A leak on the street side is a call to the council, not a plumber's invoice. On your side, a licensed plumber who covers Matamata can find and fix it, and a quick search of their name on the PGDB register before they start is worth the minute it takes.

Questions people ask

Is Matamata on the same water provider as Hamilton?

No. IAWAI looks after Hamilton City and Waikato District. Matamata sits in Matamata-Piako District, which joined Waikato Waters on 1 October 2026.

Who do I pay for water in Matamata now?

Still the council, for the time being. Waikato Waters says it will set up its own customer service and direct billing over time; until then, bills and fault reports go through Matamata-Piako District Council.

How do I check a plumber's licence?

Search the PGDB public register using the person's first and last name, then look for a current licence in the trade you need. People whose licence has lapsed can still appear, so a name on the list isn't proof on its own.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
