West Auckland at a glance
Three boards, many suburbs
Stats NZ places Henderson and both Te Atatū areas in Henderson-Massey, Glen Eden in the Waitākere Ranges, New Lynn in Whau, and splits Swanson and Titirangi across board lines.
Sewers under watch
Watercare's June 2026 map says Te Atatū has limited bulk wastewater capacity for new housing and the rest of the west is closely monitored. It plans to extend the Northern Interceptor to Henderson and upgrade the Glen Eden and Swanson branch sewers to address overflows.
Wood burners in the ranges
A wood burner was a main heater in 35.5% of Waitākere Ranges homes at the 2023 Census, against 12.1% in Henderson-Massey and 10.8% in Whau. Separate houses made up 86.7%, 80.2% and 72.0% of homes.
Wetter hills
NIWA says the Waitākere Ranges get more rain than urban Auckland, and records torrential rain on 17 July 1988 that flooded west Auckland and brought a Civil Defence emergency.
Hot water after a storm
Vector says hot water in West Auckland may be switched by pilot wires, unless a smart meter has taken over. After a big storm it restores the power lines first and the pilot wires second, so some Waitakere homes can be without hot water until everyone's power is back.
Once the power is on, give the cylinder up to six hours. Still cold? Check it is switched on, then ring Vector on 0508 832 867 for an electric cylinder. A gas cylinder is a job for a gasfitter.
Which page for your suburb?
Your pipes and Watercare's
Watercare's part of the water supply ends at the outlet of its meter. Its wastewater pipe ends at the joint with your drain or its manhole, or where your drain leaves the boundary if the public pipe runs outside. A blocked sewer goes to Watercare first, on (09) 442 2222, option 1. City-wide: blocked drains, drainlayers, leak detection and hot water cylinders.
What we would do
After a storm out west, deal with the power before the plumbing: in pilot wire areas, hot water can't come back until Vector has restored the pilot circuits. If you are adding a second home, especially in Te Atatū, ask Watercare about wastewater capacity before you commission plans. And in the ranges, keep stormwater drains clear before winter. When a tradie is needed, we find an authorised West Auckland specialist for your suburb.
