Remuera facts for your tradie
Gas in over a quarter of homes
At the 2023 Census, a fixed gas heater was a main heating type in 27.6% of Remuera dwellings, nearly three times the national 9.5%. Work on fixed gas pipes and appliances needs an authorised gasfitter.
Three character areas
The Unitary Plan has residential special character areas called Isthmus B Remuera, Isthmus B Remuera / Meadowbank and Isthmus C Remuera/Epsom. Repairs are permitted, and so is a rainwater tank; external alterations or additions need resource consent.
Three breaks in one day
In February 2024 the main under Remuera Road, between Stoneyroyd Gardens and Loch Street, burst three times in a day, and some residents had no running water for up to eight hours. Watercare has since replaced it.
Many homes held in trusts
Of 9,456 occupied homes counted in 2023, 29.6% of households held theirs in a family trust, against 11.1% nationally.
No water? Work out whose problem it is
Ask a neighbour
If the street is dry too, it is Watercare's network. Report it on (09) 442 2222, option 1. Watercare's own target is a response inside two hours and water back inside five.
Check for a notice
Watercare tells affected customers five days before a planned shutdown.
Only your place?
Look at the meter. Watercare repairs leaks in the meter box; anything between the meter's outlet and the house is yours, and a plumber fixes it.
Character homes and work on the outside
A new outdoor cylinder, a heat pump water heater or fresh pipework on a villa's street face can all count as an external alteration. In Remuera's character areas, check with Auckland Council what it needs before you sign a quote, not after the unit is bolted on.
Watercare also explains how it decides which pipes to renew: if one breaks three times in two years, it joins the renewals programme. During the Remuera Road job it moved 15 household service lines down into Loch Street.
Nearby: St Heliers, Ellerslie and Newmarket. By job: gasfitting, leak detection, hot water cylinders and emergency plumbers.
What we would do
If the house is in a family trust, make sure whoever books the work can approve it for the trustees, so the job is not held up halfway. Plan any outdoor equipment around the character rules before choosing the model. And when the water stops, check the street before you ring a plumber: a dry street is Watercare's to fix. For the work on your side, we match you with an authorised Remuera specialist, gasfitter or plumber.
