Low plains and a peninsula
Auckland Emergency Management's Manurewa plan describes the area as mostly low-lying, fertile plain that is now largely urban. Because parts of Manurewa sit on a peninsula, it says those communities are more exposed to flooding and severe weather.
That matters for drains. Watercare says stormwater that can't drain away on your own section is normally the owner's responsibility, so a plumber or drainlayer. Public drains, ponds and roads are Auckland Council's: 09 301 0101.

Total private dwellings in the Manurewa statistical area rose from 8,544 at the 2018 Census to 10,059 in 2023, with 297 under construction (33 in 2018).
Consents running hot
Stats NZ counted 610, 623 and 607 new dwellings consented in the years to March 2022, 2023 and 2024, and 577 in the year to March 2026.
Houses, half rented, often full
Across the board area, 82.7% of occupied homes were separate houses, 49.0% of households paid rent and 19.7% were crowded, the third-highest share in Auckland (Knowledge Auckland).
Damp is more common
7.5% of Manurewa dwellings were always damp and 25.2% sometimes damp in 2023, against 2.3% and 15.8% across New Zealand.
Water, power and who to ring
Your side of the water supply starts at the meter outlet. Leaks past it are the owner's, and Watercare says landlords fix leaks on their rentals. Blocked sewer or overflow: Watercare first, (09) 442 2222, option 1.

What we would do
Had your Manurewa house built recently? Under the Building Act you can notify defects within 12 months of completion and the builder must fix them in a reasonable time, so a plumbing fault in that first year starts with your builder. In a rental, put it to the landlord in writing. When an authorised plumber or drainlayer does come, check their PGDB licence by name first.
