East Auckland facts
Ten areas, one board
Stats NZ puts Howick, Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach, Cockle Bay, Half Moon Bay, Botany Downs, Dannemora, Flat Bush, East Tamaki and East Tamaki Heights in the Howick local board area.
Big homes, still building
The board area had 47,001 occupied homes at the 2023 Census. 20% have five or more bedrooms, against 7.7% nationally, and 1,609 new dwellings were consented in the year to March 2026.
Coast and storms
Auckland Emergency Management says Howick's coastline is at risk of erosion and coastal inundation. A deep low in January 2018 brought inundation and power cuts. Parks like Lloyd Elsmore and Barry Curtis help reduce flood impacts.
When slips hit public pipes
Watercare says slips after the 2023 floods broke an exposed wastewater pipe behind Selwyn Road in Howick and caused overflows. It made an interim repair and plans to move the pipe to more stable ground.
Who owns which pipe
On the water side, the line is the meter: Watercare's network runs to its outlet, and the owner looks after everything beyond. On the wastewater side, Watercare's part stops at the joint with its pipe or manhole, or where your pipe leaves the section if the sewer runs outside the boundary. On cross-lease sites, Watercare ignores the internal lines and uses the original title.
Suburb by suburb
Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and East Tāmaki each have their own page. Further east, Beachlands is in the Franklin board area and has no town water. Citywide: drainlayers, gasfitting and emergency plumbers.
What we'd do in East Auckland
If your section runs down to a stream or the coast, keep an eye on the ground after heavy rain. Sewage spilling from a manhole, or a slip that exposes one, is Watercare's to deal with: report it on (09) 442 2222, option 1, and keep clear. A cracked private drain or a sinking gully trap on your own land is a drainlayer's job, and the sooner it's found, the smaller the fix.
