Whose pipe is it?
Watercare's water pipe finishes at the outlet of your meter, and every pipe, fitting and tap after that is yours to maintain. For wastewater, its part ends at the joint with its pipe or manhole, or at your boundary when the public sewer runs outside it. A wastewater manhole on your land is still Watercare's.
What shapes a Birkenhead job
Mostly owner-occupied
Stats NZ puts Birkenhead in the Kaipātiki board area. At the 2023 Census, 29.7% of its households didn't own their home or hold it in a trust, below the national 34%.
Gas and wood heat
A fixed gas heater was one of the main ways 12.4% of Birkenhead homes kept warm, above the national 9.5%, and a wood burner 13.7%. Fixed gas pipes and appliances need an authorised gasfitter.
A new pump station on Colonial Road
Watercare's Chelsea Bay and Birkenhead upgrade adds a pump station on Colonial Road and a 1.7 km pipeline to the Birkdale sewer in Highbury, to cut overflows at Chelsea Bay and Little Shoal Bay and make room for growth.
Birkenhead Point character rules
The point is a residential special character area in the Unitary Plan. Repairs and a rainwater tank are permitted there, but external alterations or additions to a building need resource consent.
Hot water and Vector's pilot wires
North of the harbour, Vector's pilot wires can switch electric cylinders off at peak times. After a storm, crews restore the power lines before the pilot wires, so you may get lights well before hot water. If the street has had power for a while and yours is still cold, ring Vector on 0508 832 867: the fault can be in the service pilot wire or the meter box relay.

Our advice for Birkenhead
On Birkenhead Point, get Auckland Council's view before any plumbing job changes the outside of a character house, such as moving a cylinder outdoors or adding a heat pump unit to a wall. Inside jobs and like-for-like repairs are a different matter. For gas, ask the gasfitter for the certificates when they finish: a Gas Safety Certificate once anything is connected, and a certificate of compliance for general or high-risk work.
