Masterton facts that change a plumbing job
Wood burners in 57.1% of homes
At the 2023 Census, a wood burner was a main heat source in 57.1% of Masterton homes, about double the national 28.2%. Heat pumps were at 71.3%.
Frost country
NIWA says East Taratahi, near Masterton, averages 33 days a year when the temperature falls below freezing. At Te Ore Ore it counts about 81 ground frosts a year.
A growing town
Masterton had 9,276 private dwellings at the 2023 Census, up from 8,361 in 2018. Stats NZ counts 200 new homes consented in the year to March 2022 and 125 in the year to March 2026.
Who owns the homes
61.6% of households owned their home and 6.4% held it in a family trust in 2023. The other 32.1% weren't owned by the people living there, close to the national 34%.
Who runs Masterton's water
We haven't been able to confirm which organisation runs Masterton's water today. For anything at the toby, in the street or in the public sewer, ask Masterton District Council first, and ask it where its pipe ends.
Waitī Waters, the water organisation agreed by the Masterton, Carterton, South Wairarapa and Tararua councils, is due to be operational on or before 1 July 2027.
Fires that heat water
The census figures are about heating rooms. Some fires also run a wetback, where pipework in the firebox sends heated water up to the cylinder. If yours does, say so when you book, because it narrows your options for a new cylinder.
Without a building consent, a cylinder fed by a solid-fuel heater can only be swapped for a comparable open-vented model sitting where the old one did, on the existing pipework. Our wetbacks page explains more.
Before a Masterton tradie starts
- See their PGDB licence, on a card or the PGDB app, and check the expiry date.
- Make sure it covers the work: a gas job needs a gasfitter, a drain needs a drainlayer.
- Check the name on the PGDB register; a tick or green means a current licence.
- Ask who their supervisor is, if they have one, and look that person up as well.
Around the Wairarapa
Carterton, Wellington and the Wellington region. Jobs: burst pipes, cylinder replacement and gasfitting.
What we would do
Get ready in autumn. Find the toby and make sure it turns, protect any pipe or tap that's out in the frost, and if your fire heats your water, have the wetback and cylinder looked at before the first big cold snap. For anything on the council's side, ask Masterton District Council where its pipe stops before a plumber or drainlayer starts digging. Inside the boundary, we'll hand the job to a Masterton tradie with that speciality.
