Feilding facts that change a plumbing job
More gas heating than most towns
At the 2023 Census, 14.3% of Feilding homes used a fixed gas heater as a main heat source, against 9.5% nationally. Installing, moving or repairing fixed gas pipes and appliances is gasfitting, and needs an authorised gasfitter.
The 2004 floods
In the February 2004 storm, NIWA records that Feilding was cut off by flooding and many bridges were washed out. A civil defence emergency covered the region from 17 to 25 February.
A steadily bigger town
Feilding had 6,966 private dwellings at the 2023 Census, up from 6,399 in 2018. Stats NZ counts 115 new homes consented in the year to March 2025 and 90 in the year to March 2026.
Damp homes
1.4% of Feilding homes were always damp and 14.4% sometimes damp in 2023, close to the national 2.3% and 15.8%. A hidden leak is one possible cause of damp, so it's worth ruling out.
If you smell gas indoors
No flames, no switches
Keep flames and cigarettes away, and don't use electrical switches or a mobile phone in that area.
Turn it off
If it is safe, turn off the appliance valves and the gas at the meter or LPG cylinder.
Air it out
Open doors and windows. If the smell doesn't clear, go outside.
Get help
In an emergency, ring 111. A fault in your pipes or appliances is a job for an authorised gasfitter; a supply problem goes to your gas retailer.
Feilding's water
Manawatū District Council runs Feilding's water and wastewater itself, as an in-house business unit, rather than through a new water company. We couldn't confirm its rule on where the council's pipe meets yours, so ask the council before any digging near the boundary.
Whoever comes, check their name on the PGDB register and look for a current licence in the right trade. A gas job should end with a Gas Safety Certificate once the work is connected.
Nearby
Palmerston North, Levin and the wider Manawatū-Whanganui region. By job: gasfitting, gas leaks, califonts and blocked drains.
What we would do
Work out whether you need a plumber or a gasfitter before you ring around, because in Feilding the answer is often gas. Anything involving a fixed heater, a califont or gas pipes needs a gasfitter, and you should get a Gas Safety Certificate at the end. Water pipes and drains are plumbing and drainlaying, and the council comes first for anything at the boundary. Then let us find a Feilding tradie with the right licence and a speciality in your job.
