Plumbers in Rangiora

Council water, your pipes.

Rangiora's water comes from Waimakariri District Council, which runs 16 schemes for more than 15,000 properties. The council fixes faults on its side of the point of supply; from its service valve to your house, the pipe is yours. For your side, we match you with an authorised plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer who works around Rangiora.

Rangiora in four facts

Its own district

Stats NZ puts every Rangiora statistical area in Waimakariri District, so Christchurch City's rules don't apply here.

Building picks up

New dwellings consented in Rangiora rose from 85 in the year to March 2023 to 248 in the year to March 2026.

Solid fuel is common

Wood burners are a main heater in 30.6% of Rangiora homes and pellet fires in 3.4%, both above the national figures.

Summer demand

The council says summer use can reach four times a typical winter day. From December to February it asks for voluntary Level 1 habits, such as watering by house number.

Council fault or plumber job?

Ring the council on 0800 965 468 first. If the fault is on its side of the point of supply, its contractor fixes it. If it's in the house, or in the pipe from the service valve to the house, you'll need a licensed plumber and the bill is yours.

Sewer laterals work on the same idea. The lateral to the main belongs to the landowner, blockages and all, unless the main or the lateral under the road is at fault.

Bores, tanks and backflow

Got a bore or a tank as well as town supply? The council may require a backflow prevention device at your boundary, particularly where the private supply is cross-connected to pipes on the public one. Our backflow page explains the devices and testing.

Building in Rangiora? Ask the plumber

  • Will any plumbing or drainlaying be self-certified? From 7 September 2026 it can be, but only if you agree.
  • Who is the endorsed plumber or drainlayer, and will they be named to the council before work starts?
  • If I'd rather have the council inspector check it, what changes for you?
  • Who supervises you, so I can check that person on the PGDB register too?

What we would do

For a Rangiora leak, start with the council's number rather than a plumber: if the fault is on its side, you won't pay. If it's yours, chase it before summer, when the council asks everyone to go easy on water. Building? Decide early whether you want self-certification or a council inspection, and get it written into the contract.

Questions people ask

Do I have to accept self-certified plumbing on my Rangiora build?

No. Waimakariri District Council says owners must agree to it, and you can ask for a council inspection instead. A building consent is still needed wherever one normally would be.

Does Rangiora have water restrictions?

From December to February the council asks people to act as if Level 1 applies, voluntarily: unattended hoses and sprinklers every second day, watering early or late, and even-numbered houses on even dates.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
