Who looks after the water
Marlborough District Council supplies Blenheim's water and takes its wastewater now. On 1 July 2027 the council's water staff are due to transfer to Marlborough Waters, the new organisation that will take over.
We couldn't confirm the council's rule on where its pipe stops and yours begins. So for a leak at the toby, a fault in the street or a sewer overflow, ask Marlborough District Council first. It can tell you whether the pipe is its job or yours.
Blenheim facts that change a plumbing job
July is the frosty month
At NIWA's Blenheim Research station, there are 22 air frosts and 59 ground frosts in an average year. July alone averages 9.3 air frosts. An outside tap or a pipe on a cold south wall is worth lagging before then.
Plenty of wood burners
45.5% of Blenheim homes used a wood burner as a main heat source at the 2023 Census, against 28.2% nationally. That's room heating, not hot water. If yours does have a wetback, tell the plumber, because it limits which cylinders can replace the old one without consent.
A growing town
The 2023 Census counted 12,333 private dwellings in Blenheim, 11,478 of them occupied. Stats NZ counts 216 new homes consented in the year to March 2023 and 140 in the year to March 2026.
Who you are, as a customer
At the 2023 Census, 61.7% of Blenheim households owned their home and 10.4% held it in a family trust. If you rent, the landlord is the one to arrange a plumber.
Checking a Blenheim tradie
- Ask to see their PGDB practising licence, on a card or in the PGDB app, and check it hasn't expired.
- Make sure it covers the trade: plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are separate licences.
- If they're supervised, get the supervisor's name and check that person too.
- Look them up on the register by first and last name. A tick or green in the far-right column means current.
Around Marlborough
Over the hill: Picton. The region: Marlborough. Jobs worth reading about before winter: burst pipes, wetbacks and outdoor cylinders.
What we would do
Use autumn to get ready. Find your toby, check it turns, and have any pipe or tap that's exposed to the frost protected. If the cylinder is getting on and your fire heats water too, plan the replacement now rather than in a July emergency, so there's time to work through the consent question. For council pipes, ring Marlborough District Council. For the rest, tell us the job and a Blenheim tradie who specialises in it can take it on.
